Marijuana use has ancient roots, with the practice of smoking cannabis documented thousands of years ago. Historical and archaeological evidence points to its use in ancient China around 2700 BCE, and similar references appear in other regions by roughly 2000–1000 BCE, placing the origin at about five millennia ago. That makes roughly five thousand years the best fit for the earliest well-attested use. The shorter timeframes reflect much more recent periods that do not capture the ancient origins of the practice.
